Tommy Bankhead (born October 24, 1931 – died December 16, 2000) was an American blues musician. He was a talented guitarist and singer. He played a type of music called Delta blues. Tommy Bankhead played with many famous musicians. These included Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson I, and Elmore James. Elmore James was his cousin! Tommy also sometimes played the bass guitar and harmonica. He even released some of his own music albums. Later in his life, he toured with his band, Tommy Bankhead and the Blues Eldoradoes.
Tommy Bankhead's Musical Journey
Tommy Bankhead was born in Lake Cormorant, Mississippi. This was on October 24, 1931. In 1949, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri. There, he started his own bands. First, they were called the Landrockers. Later, they became the Blues Eldorados. He played music in clubs all around St. Louis.
Tommy Bankhead was a very important part of the St. Louis blues music scene. He played for over 50 years! He performed with many other great musicians. Some of these were Little Milton, Oliver Sain, and Ike Turner. He also played with Henry Townsend and Albert King. Besides music, he sometimes worked as a deputy sheriff and a security guard.
Tommy Bankhead passed away in St. Louis. He died on December 16, 2000. He was 69 years old.
