Geography and Location
Lake Cormorant is located in the flat, low-lying area called the flood plain of the Mississippi River. This means the land here was formed by the river over many years.
Just south of the community, you can find what used to be a bend in the Mississippi River. This old bend is now a separate, curved lake known as an oxbow lake. Lake Cormorant Bayou, another old river channel, flows nearby and is now a smaller river that feeds into the Coldwater River. The Coldwater River is a type of river called a yazoo stream, which flows parallel to a larger river for a distance before joining it.
To protect the community from floods, special walls called levees and channels called floodways were built. These structures help move water away from Lake Cormorant and into the Lake Cormorant Bayou, especially during heavy rains or when the river rises.
