Tomo Sugawara's Football Journey
Tomo Sugawara was born in Muroran, Japan, on June 3, 1976. He started his professional football career with Verdy Kawasaki in 1995. This was the same club he played for as a young player.
Early Career and Success
On July 19, 1995, Tomo played his first game and even scored a goal against Urawa Reds. From 1996, he became a regular player. He often played as a defensive midfielder or a center back. During this time, his team, Verdy Kawasaki, won the 1996 Emperor's Cup. They also finished second in the 1996 J.League Cup.
Playing in Brazil and Return to Japan
In 1999, Tomo Sugawara moved to Brazil to play for Santos. After one year, he returned to Japan in 2000. He then joined Vissel Kobe. He continued to play many games as a defensive midfielder for this club.
Later Years with Tokyo Verdy
In 2006, Tomo went back to his old club, Tokyo Verdy. The team was in the J2 League at that time. He played many matches and helped them get promoted back to the J1 League in 2008. However, the team went back to J2 the next year. Tomo's chances to play in games became less frequent from 2009. He decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2011 season.
The Fastest Red Card Ever!
Tomo Sugawara is famous for something very unusual. On April 15, 2009, during a J2 League match between Tokyo Verdy and Sagan Tosu, he received a red card in just 9 seconds! This happened right after the game started. The referee, Jumpei Iida, sent him off the field. This is known as the fastest red card in football history around the world. However, it has not yet been officially recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
