Tomo Sugawara's Football Journey

Tomo Sugawara was born in Muroran, Hokkaido, Japan, on June 3, 1976. He grew up to become a well-known football player. After his playing career, he started working as a coach.

Early Career and Success

Tomo began his football journey with the youth team of Verdy Kawasaki in 1995. This team later became known as Tokyo Verdy. He made his first professional appearance on July 19, 1995. In that game, he even scored a goal against Urawa Reds!

From 1996, Tomo became a regular player for Verdy Kawasaki. He often played as a defensive midfielder or a central defender. During this time, his club won the 1996 Emperor's Cup. They also finished second in the 1996 J.League Cup.

In 1999, Tomo Sugawara moved to Brazil to play for Santos. He played a few matches there before returning to Japan. In 2000, he joined Vissel Kobe. He played many games for Vissel Kobe as a defensive midfielder for six years.

In 2006, Tomo went back to Tokyo Verdy. The club was in the J2 League at that time. He helped them get promoted back to the J1 League in 2008. However, they were relegated to J2 again the next year. Tomo's playing time became less after 2009. He decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2011 season.

A World Record Moment

Tomo Sugawara is famous for a very unusual event in football history. On April 15, 2009, during a J2 League match, he received a red card! This meant he was sent off the field. What made it special was how fast it happened. He was sent off just 9 seconds after the game started! This is known as the fastest sending-off in world football history. However, it has not yet been officially recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
