Toms Place (once called Hans Lof's) is a small, unincorporated community in Mono County, California. An unincorporated community means it's not an official city or town with its own local government. It is located on Rock Creek, about 10 miles (16 km) east of Mount Morrison. Toms Place sits high up in the mountains, at an elevation of 7,090 feet (2,161 meters). The Story of Toms Place
The history of Toms Place began in 1919. A man named Hans Lof started a small resort there. He called his new place "Hans Lof's."
In 1922, Tom Yernby bought the resort from Hans Lof. Tom decided to change the name to "Toms Place." He ran the resort for many years, until 1935. Later, in 1963, Toms Place got its very own post office.
Famous People Who Lived Here
Toms Place has been home to some interesting people. One well-known resident was James Whitmore. He was a famous American actor, known for his roles in movies and on stage. James Whitmore owned several homes in Toms Place. He lived there for a long time. Even in 2013, some of his family members still lived in the community.
