Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Tomás Añorbe y Corregel (born in Madrid, 1686 – died in Madrid, 1741) was a Spanish priest, playwright (someone who writes plays), and poet. He lived a long time ago, in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Life and Works

Tomás Añorbe y Corregel was a chaplain at the Royal Convent of the Incarnation in Madrid. He spent much of his life helping others through charity work. Alongside this, he loved writing poetry and, most of all, plays for the theater.

He was a very important writer during a time known as the late Baroque period in theater. He wrote plays similar to other famous playwrights of his time, like José de Cañizares and Antonio de Zamora.

One type of play he wrote was a mythological zarzuela. A zarzuela is a Spanish musical play that often includes singing and dancing. His zarzuela, called Jupiter and Dánae, was based on an old myth. He made it fun by adding modern jokes and funny characters, like one named Mamurrias.

However, his most famous work was a serious play (a tragedy) called El Paulino, which he wrote in 1740. This play was inspired by Cinna, a famous French tragedy by Pierre Corneille. Even though it was inspired by another play, the cover proudly said it was a "new tragedy in the French style, with all the rules of art."

Tomás Añorbe also wrote other kinds of plays. These included short, funny pieces like Entremés del Mudo (1734) and Second Sainete, or The Matter of Casting Ladies and Galants (1734). He also wrote several comedies, such as Lovers of Salerno (1739), Nullities of love (1734), and La Segismunda (1739).
