Tomé is a port city and commune located in the Biobío Region of Chile. A commune is like a local government area. It is surrounded by other towns and the Pacific Ocean. The main ways people make a living here are through making textiles (like clothes) and fishing.
History of Tomé
Tomé has been an important place for a long time. It was founded way back in 1544. Over the centuries, it grew into the city we know today.
The 2010 Earthquake
On February 27, 2010, a very strong earthquake hit Chile. It had a magnitude of 8.8. This powerful earthquake greatly affected Tomé, along with other cities like Constitucion, Concepcion, and Talcahuano. The earthquake caused a lot of damage to buildings and roads in the area.
People of Tomé
In 2002, a count of the population (called a census) showed that Tomé covers an area of about 494.5 square kilometers. At that time, there were 52,440 people living there. More women lived in Tomé than men.
Most of the people, about 87.6%, lived in the city areas. The rest, about 12.4%, lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Tomé grew by 6.4%.
The commune of Tomé includes several smaller towns and areas. These include Rafael, Menque, Cocholgüe, Punta de Parra, and Dichato.
Education in Tomé
Tomé has many good schools for younger students and high schools for older ones. This means kids in Tomé have good places to learn and grow. For students who want to go to college, the Universidad de Concepción is only about 30 minutes away. This is one of the best universities in Chile.
