Anton "Toni" Brunner (born 23 August 1974) is a Swiss farmer and politician. He led the Swiss People's Party (SVP/UDC) from 2008 to 2016. He was also a member of the National Council, which is like the main parliament in Switzerland, from 1995 to 2018.
About Toni Brunner
Toni Brunner was born in Wattwil, a town in the St. Gallen area of Switzerland. In 1995, when he was just 21 years old, he was elected to the federal parliament. This made him the youngest person ever to join the parliament at that time.
Besides working on his farm, Toni Brunner also ran an internet radio station. This radio station was made especially for farmers. He also led the St. Gallen part of his political party.
Leading the Swiss People's Party
On March 1, 2008, Toni Brunner became the leader of the national Swiss People's Party. He took over from Ueli Maurer. Toni Brunner was very close to Christoph Blocher, who is a well-known figure in the party. Blocher served as one of the party's vice-chairmen.
In January 2016, Toni Brunner announced he would step down as president of the SVP. This was after the 2015 Swiss federal election, where his party gained a lot of support. He left his role in April 2016 and Albert Rösti became the new leader.
Toni Brunner is also a member of a group called the Campaign for an Independent and Neutral Switzerland. This group works to keep Switzerland independent and neutral.
