Toni Brunner's Early Life and Political Start
Toni Brunner was born in Wattwil, a town in the St. Gallen region of Switzerland. He started his political career at a very young age. In 1995, when he was just 21, he was elected to the Swiss national parliament. This made him the youngest person ever to join the parliament at that time.
Besides his work in politics, Toni Brunner also managed his own farm. He even ran an internet radio station that was made just for farmers. He also led the St. Gallen branch of his political party.
Leading the Swiss People's Party
On March 1, 2008, Toni Brunner took over as the leader of the national Swiss People's Party. He replaced Ueli Maurer in this important role. Brunner was known to be a close supporter of Christoph Blocher, who was a very influential figure in the party. Blocher served as one of the party's vice-chairmen.
In January 2016, Toni Brunner announced that he would step down as the party president. This decision came after the 2015 Swiss federal election, where the Swiss People's Party had achieved great success and gained many new supporters. He officially left his position on April 23, 2016, and Albert Rösti became the new president.
Toni Brunner is also a member of the Campaign for an Independent and Neutral Switzerland. This group works to keep Switzerland independent and not involved in conflicts with other countries.
