Albert Rösti (born August 7, 1967) is a Swiss politician and businessman. He has been a Member of the Swiss Federal Council since January 1, 2023. The Federal Council is like the government's main team in Switzerland.
Before this, he was the leader of the Swiss People's Party (SVP) from 2016 to 2020. He also served as a member of the National Council for the canton of Bern. The National Council is one of the two parts of the Swiss parliament. He was a member from 2011 until 2022. Mr. Rösti lives in Uetendorf, which is a town near Thun in Switzerland.
Early Life and Education
Albert Rösti was born on August 7, 1967, in Kandersteg, a village in the canton of Bern. He grew up in a family of farmers who lived in the mountains. His family followed the Protestant faith.
He went to ETH Zurich to study agronomy. Agronomy is the science of farming and growing crops. After that, in 2002, he continued his studies at the University of Rochester. There, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. This degree helps people learn how to manage businesses.
Professional Career
Mr. Rösti started working for the Bern Department of Economic Affairs in 1998. He worked his way up, becoming the Deputy Secretary General from 2001 to 2003. Then, he was the Secretary General from 2003 to 2006.
After that, he became the director of Swiss Milk Producers. This organization helps dairy farmers in Switzerland. Since 2013, he has owned and managed his own company. It is called Büro Dr. Rösti GmbH, and it helps businesses and politicians with advice.
From 2007 to 2014, Mr. Rösti was the president of the Agricultural Information Service (LID). In May 2014, he was chosen to be the president of Action for a Sensible Energy Policy Switzerland (AVES). This group works on energy-related issues in Switzerland. In May 2015, he also became the president of Swiss Oil. This is an association for companies that sell fuel in Switzerland.
Political Career
Albert Rösti began his political journey in his hometown of Uetendorf. From 2000 to 2007, he was the president of the local branch of the SVP party there. In January 2008, he became a member of the Uetendorf local council. Later, in 2014, he became the mayor of Uetendorf.
In 2010, he tried to get elected to the Bernese Government, but he was not successful. However, in the 2011 Swiss federal election, he was elected to the National Council. This is an important part of the Swiss parliament.
For the 2015 Swiss federal election, Mr. Rösti was in charge of the SVP's election campaign. He also tried to get elected to the Council of States for Bern, but he did not win that election. He continued to serve in the National Council until December 31, 2022.
In November 2015, the SVP in Bern suggested Mr. Rösti as a possible candidate for the Swiss Federal Council. However, he decided not to run for that position two weeks later.
On April 23, 2016, Albert Rösti was chosen to be the Chairman of the SVP party. Everyone voted for him. He took over from the previous chairman, Toni Brunner. He stepped down from leading the party in 2020, and Marco Chiesa became the new leader.
On December 7, 2022, Mr. Rösti was elected to the Federal Council in the 2022 Swiss Federal Council election. He took the place of Ueli Maurer. He officially started his new role on January 1, 2023.
Personal Life
Albert Rösti has been married to Theres Neuenschwander since 1994. She used to work as a flight attendant for Swiss International Air Lines. They have two children together:
- André Rösti, born in 1995. He studied at the University of California, Irvine. He is married to Markelle Kelly, who is from Washington state in the USA.
- Sarina Rösti, born in 2000. She also used to work as a flight attendant.
Mr. Rösti and his family live in Uetendorf, which is close to the city of Thun.
