Albert Rösti (born August 7, 1967) is a Swiss politician and businessman. He has been a member of the Swiss Federal Council since January 1, 2023. This means he is part of Switzerland's main government.
Before joining the Federal Council, he was the leader of the Swiss People's Party from 2016 to 2020. He also served as a member of the National Council for the canton of Bern from 2011 until 2022. Mr. Rösti lives in Uetendorf, a town near Thun in Switzerland.
Early Life and Education
Albert Rösti was born on August 7, 1967. His birthplace was Kandersteg, a village in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. He grew up in a family of mountain farmers.
He went to ETH Zurich to study agronomy. This is a field that deals with the science of farming. Later, in 2002, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. He got this degree from the University of Rochester in the United States.
Professional Career
Albert Rösti started his career in government. From 2001 to 2006, he worked for the Bern Department of Economic Affairs. He was a Deputy Secretary General and then the Secretary General.
After that, he became the director of Swiss Milk Producers. This organization helps dairy farmers. Since 2013, he has owned his own company. It is called Büro Dr. Rösti GmbH and offers business and political advice.
Mr. Rösti has also led several important groups.
- From 2007 to 2014, he was president of the Agricultural Information Service.
- In 2014, he became president of Action for a Sensible Energy Policy Switzerland.
- In 2015, he took over as president of Swiss Oil. This group represents fuel traders in Switzerland.
Political Journey
Albert Rösti began his political career in his hometown. From 2000 to 2007, he led the Swiss People's Party chapter in Uetendorf. In 2008, he became a member of the local council. He was later elected mayor of Uetendorf in 2014.
In 2011, he was elected to the National Council. This is one of the two chambers of the Swiss Parliament. He served there until the end of 2022.
In 2016, Albert Rösti was chosen to lead the Swiss People's Party. He was the chairman until 2020.
On December 7, 2022, he was elected to the Federal Council. This is the highest executive body in Switzerland. He officially started his role on January 1, 2023.
Personal Life
Albert Rösti is married to Theres Neuenschwander. They got married in 1994. Theres used to work as a flight attendant.
They have two children together. Their son is named André, and their daughter is named Sarina. The family lives in Uetendorf, which is close to the city of Thun.
