Discovering Tonsley's History
Tonsley is a relatively new suburb. It was officially created on 27 January 2017. Before that, it was part of a larger area called Clovelly Park. The southern section of Clovelly Park was separated to form the new suburb of Tonsley.
How Tonsley Got Its Name
The name Tonsley comes from a place in England called Tonsley Hall. This name was chosen to honor its history. The area was once home to a very important car factory. People often called this factory "Tonsley Park."
From Car Factory to Innovation Hub
A big car factory used to be in Tonsley. It was first opened in 1964 by Chrysler Australia. Later, in 1980, another company called Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) took over the factory. The factory made cars for many years. However, it eventually closed its doors in 2008.
After the car factory closed, the area began to change. The old factory site is now being developed into something new and exciting. It's called the Tonsley Innovation District. This district is a special place for new businesses and ideas.
