The Tonto River is an important river located in Oaxaca, Mexico. It starts high up in the Zongolica mountains. This river plays a big role in the local area.
River Journey
The Tonto River flows through beautiful landscapes. It is a key part of the water system in this region of Mexico.
The Dam and Lake
A large structure called the Miguel Alemán Dam holds back the Tonto River. This dam is located close to the town of Temascal or Nuevo Soyaltepec. When the river is dammed, it creates a big body of water known as the Miguel Alemán Lake. This lake is important for many reasons, including providing water and electricity.
Joining Other Rivers
After flowing past the dam, the Tonto River continues its journey southeast. It passes by the city of San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec. Here, the Tonto River meets another river called the Santo Domingo River. When these two rivers join, they form an even larger river known as the Papaloapan River.
