Zongolica is a town and a municipality in Mexico. It is located in the southern part of the state of Veracruz. Zongolica is about 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Xalapa, which is the state capital.
The municipality covers an area of about 347.33 square kilometers (134.10 square miles). Its name comes from the Nahuatl language. Tzontli-coliuhqui means 'crafty hair'.
What Zongolica Produces
The main things grown in Zongolica are maize (corn), oranges, coffee, and mangoes. The climate here is cool and humid. The average temperature is about 17.4 °C (63.3 °F). It rains mostly in the summer and autumn months.
Culture and Festivals
People in Zongolica celebrate special events every year. In October, there is a big festival for San Francisco de Asís. He is the town's patron saint. In December, another festival honors the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Zongolica is also home to the Ixcohuapa people. They have unique traditions. One interesting tradition is cooking and eating the larvae of a type of moth called Arsenura armida.
Geography of Zongolica
The municipality of Zongolica shares its borders with other places. To the north, it is next to Tequila and Omealca. To the east, it borders Tezonapa. The state of Puebla is to the south. To the west, Zongolica is next to Los Reyes.
Animal Life
A special type of fish lives in Zongolica. It is called the Zongolica catfish (Rhamdia zongolicensis). This fish is named after the area. It has only been found in one cave in the Sierra de Zongolica mountains.
