Joseph Anthony Cox (born March 31, 1958) is an American actor. He is well-known for his roles in movies like Bad Santa, Friday, and Me, Myself & Irene. He also appeared in Date Movie, Epic Movie, and Disaster Movie. Tony Cox played an Ewok in Return of the Jedi and was in George Lucas's Willow. He also played the Preacher in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice.
Early Life
Tony Cox was born in Uniontown, Alabama. His parents are Henrietta Cox-Penn and Joe Cox. He grew up in Uniontown with his grandparents, Lottie and Henry Jones. His mother and stepfather, Rudolph Penn, live in College Park, Georgia.
When he was 10 years old, Tony became a very good drummer. He met his future wife, Otelia, in high school. They got married in 1981 when Tony was 23.
After high school, Tony went to Alabama State University. He first planned to study music. In an interview, Tony said he played drums "by ear." This means he could play without reading music. He was very talented, even better than some drummers who could read music.
Acting Career
Tony Cox decided to become an actor after seeing Billy Barty. Billy Barty was an actor who was also a little person. He also started an organization called Little People of America. Tony's family and friends encouraged him to act.
When he was 18, Tony moved to Los Angeles. He started taking acting classes. Soon, he began getting jobs in commercials, movies, and TV shows.
He is famous for playing Marcus in Bad Santa. In this movie, Marcus is the smart one in a team that cracks safes. Tony also played a funny version of Dr. Hitch in Date Movie. He played Marcus again in Bad Santa 2, which came out in 2016.
Tony also appeared on the TV show Martin. He played a character named Bennie in one episode. In the movie Me, Myself & Irene, Tony played a Mensa International member. He was a limousine driver who stole Jim Carrey's character's wife.
Tony Cox stopped acting in 2016. He said in a 2023 interview that he took time off after hip surgery. He then decided to step away from acting completely.
