Tony Cox is an American journalist who works in radio and television. He is well-known for hosting the radio talk show UpFront with Tony Cox. He also used to host News & Notes on National Public Radio (NPR).
Early Career and Education
Tony Cox studied at UCLA, where he earned two degrees: one in English and another in Theatre.
He started his radio career in 1969 at KFWB in Los Angeles. This was an all-news station where he worked as a writer, editor, reporter, and anchor.
In 1982, Tony Cox moved into television. He became a reporter and early morning anchor for the Los Angeles TV station KNXT, which is now known as KCBS-TV. In 1985, he changed stations, joining KTTV as an anchor. He also anchored for KCAL-TV (then called KHJ-TV).
Cox spent 10 years as a senior reporter for Inside Edition. He also worked on sports shows like The Last Word With Jim Rome for Fox Sports Net and as a reporter for DirecTV Sports.
Work with NPR and UpFront
In 2002, Tony Cox began working with National Public Radio (NPR). He was a guest host on the Tavis Smiley Show and later became the host of News & Notes.
After News & Notes ended in 2009, Cox worked with the African American Public Radio Consortium. Together, they created UpFront with Tony Cox. This is a daily news and talk show that features interviews. It is made for African American audiences. The show started in October 2009 and was broadcast in 17 U.S. radio markets by January 2011.
Awards and Other Roles
Tony Cox has received many awards for his work. He has won seven awards from the Los Angeles Press Club, including one for News & Notes in 2008. He also won an Emmy Award in the Los Angeles area.
He was a founding member and the first president of the Black Journalists Association of Southern California. He has also served as a vice president for the National Association of Black Journalists and has received two NAACP Image Awards.
Besides his radio work, Tony Cox also teaches. He is a faculty member in the Television, Film and Media Studies department at California State University, Los Angeles.
