Tony Martin was born as Alvin Morris in San Francisco, California. His parents were Hattie and Edward Clarence Morris.
Tony Martin's Career
Tony Martin started his career in movies. He had small roles at first. For example, he played a sailor in the 1936 movie Follow the Fleet. This film starred the famous dancers Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
Later, he signed with big movie studios like 20th Century-Fox and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. He starred in many musical films. Between 1938 and 1942, he made several popular songs for Decca Records.
Tony Martin also appeared in the 1941 Marx Brothers movie The Big Store. In this film, he played a singer. He performed a song called Tenement Symphony. This song was written by Hal Borne, who became his long-time music director.
His Family Life
In 1937, Tony Martin married actress Alice Faye. They had starred in several movies together. However, they divorced in 1941.
Martin later married the famous actress and dancer Cyd Charisse in 1948. They stayed married for a very long time, until her death in 2008. That was 60 years of marriage! They had one son together, Tony Martin, Jr. He was born in 1950 and passed away in 2011, before his father. Tony Martin also adopted Cyd Charisse's son, Nicky, from her first marriage.
Later Years
Tony Martin lived a long life. He passed away peacefully on July 27, 2012. He was 98 years old.
