Tonye T. Patano is an American actress. She is well-known for playing the character Heylia James in the TV series Weeds.
She has also appeared in many other popular TV shows. These include Law & Order, ... and the City, Monk, and Third Watch. Tonye Patano was also part of the first cast of the Broadway play, 45 Seconds from Broadway. This play was written by Neil Simon.

Tonye Patano's Acting Career
Early Roles in Film and TV
Tonye Patano's first acting role on screen was in a TV movie called The Jesse Owens Story in 1984. Since then, she has appeared in many TV series as a guest star. Some of these shows include ... and the City, Monk, Third Watch, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Elementary. She has played different characters in the Law & Order TV shows.
She also acted in films like Highway Heartbreaker in 1992. She had a small part in A Price Above Rubies in 1998. Other movies she appeared in are Little Manhattan and The Great New Wonderful, both released in 2005.
Becoming Heylia James in Weeds
In 2005, Tonye Patano got the role of Heylia James in the TV series Weeds. For her work on Weeds, she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award. This was for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble by a Group of Actors in a Comedy Series in 2006. Two years later, she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. This nomination was for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Heylia. Patano left the show after its third season. However, she came back for some episodes in season 7.
After Weeds, she played Emily in the Hallmark movie Loving Leah in 2009. In 2018, Patano played Beverly, a counselor, in the movie A Vigilante. She also played a probation officer in the drama Jack of the Red Hearts in 2015.
Stage Performances
Tonye Patano has also performed in plays. In 1997, she played Nurse O'Neil in The Sunshine Boys. A reviewer said she was "excellent" in this role. In 2000, she won a Connecticut Critics Circle Award for best ensemble. This was for her acting in From the Mississippi Delta. Patano appeared on Broadway as Ms. Gravátt in 45 Seconds from Broadway in 2001.
She also played Mama Nadi in the play Ruined. Critics praised her performance, calling her "delightful" and "magnetic." Another critic said she was superb in the role.
Tonye Patano's Personal Life
When Tonye Patano was 35 years old, she was diagnosed with diabetes. In 2005, she also had a stroke.
