Story of Little Manhattan
Gabe Meets Rosemary
The main character is Gabe, a 10-year-old boy who lives in Manhattan. His parents are going through a tough time and are planning to get divorced. Gabe loves exploring the city on his scooter. The friendly doorman in his building often watches over him.
One day, Gabe meets Rosemary, an 11-year-old girl from his class. He has known her since kindergarten. They are paired together in a self-defense class. Suddenly, Gabe starts to see Rosemary in a new way. He realizes he has a crush on her.
First Love and New Experiences
Gabe is very happy when he and Rosemary start spending time together. He is completely charmed by her and her life. Rosemary lives with her loving parents near Central Park. Her family seems very happy and well-off.
Gabe takes Rosemary on a tour of Central Park. Another day, they explore the city, even trying to look at an apartment for rent. This makes Gabe's parents a little worried. Later, Rosemary's parents take them to hear a jazz pianist at The Carlyle. During the show, Gabe and Rosemary finally hold hands. After the show, Gabe surprises Rosemary by kissing her.
Challenges and Changes
Rosemary's family life is very different from Gabe's. His parents are trying to get along while waiting for their divorce. As Gabe and Rosemary's friendship grows, Gabe starts to wonder about his feelings. He is confused about falling in love.
Things get more complicated when Gabe learns Rosemary is going to summer camp for six weeks. When she returns, her parents plan to send her to a private school. Then, Gabe and Rosemary are given new sparring partners in their self-defense class. Gabe feels jealous of Rosemary's new partner, who is taller and better at karate.
Trying to Win Her Back
With time running out before Rosemary leaves, Gabe tries to get closer to her. But he accidentally pushes her away instead. In a desperate attempt to impress Rosemary, Gabe tries to show off and earn his yellow belt in karate. However, he accidentally breaks his hand.
Gabe feels sad and confused about love. His father tells him that his own marriage broke apart because of things they didn't say. Realizing he needs to speak up, Gabe goes to a wedding reception where Rosemary is. He tells her how he feels.
Rosemary is surprised. She says she doesn't think she's ready for love, but she is happy to see him. She asks him to dance. As they dance, Gabe thinks about how he and Rosemary are on different paths. He compares them to "two ships that passed in Sheep Meadow" in Central Park.
A Happy Ending
Gabe returns home and finds his parents laughing together. They are remembering their honeymoon. Gabe is surprised and happy when his father says he "cleared out some old stuff." It seems his parents might be getting back together. They all happily go out for dinner.
As the movie ends, Gabe narrates what Rosemary meant to him. He says, "...I'm never gonna get another first love. That one's always gonna be her."
