Toogee people facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Toogee were an Aboriginal Tasmanian group of people. They lived in Western Tasmania, Australia, a long time ago, before Europeans settled there. Their home area included a place called Macquarie Harbour.

Who Were the Toogee People?

The Toogee people were made up of two main groups, or "bands," called the Lowreenne and the Mimegin. These groups lived and worked together in their traditional lands.

Tools and Ancient Discoveries

The Toogee were skilled at making tools from stone. They even used a special type of natural glass called Darwin Glass. This glass was formed when a meteorite hit the Earth!

Scientists have found many old items in this area, showing that people lived there as far back as 20,000 years ago. One important place where these ancient items were found is Kutikina Cave. The Toogee also left behind piles of shells along the coast, known as middens. These middens are like ancient rubbish dumps that tell us what they ate.

Neighboring Groups

The Toogee lived near other Aboriginal groups. To their north, near the Pieman River, lived the Peternidic band. To their south, near Port Davey, lived the Ninene people.

Toogee in Geography

A special place in the ocean south of Tasmania is named after the Toogee people. It's called the Toogee sub-basin. This area is part of a larger underwater feature known as the South Tasman Rise. It's next to another area called the Lowreenne Massif, which is named after one of the Toogee bands.
