Tor Obrestad (born February 12, 1938 – died January 25, 2020) was a Norwegian writer. He wrote many different kinds of books. He was known for his novels, poems, and non-fiction books.

About Tor Obrestad's Life

Tor Obrestad was born in a place called Hå in Norway. This was on February 12, 1938. His dad was a farmer named Jon R. Obrestad. His mom was Sophie Riise.

He went to college to become a teacher. He worked as a schoolteacher for a while. Later, he studied at the University of Oslo. He loved writing so much that he became a full-time writer! He also worked as a journalist. He wrote for a newspaper called Stavanger Aftenblad. Tor Obrestad passed away on January 25, 2020.

Tor Obrestad's Writing Journey

Tor Obrestad started his writing career in 1966. He released two books that year. One was a collection of poems called Kollisjon. The other was a book of short stories named Vind. He won an award called Tarjei Vesaas' debutantpris for these first books. This award is given to new writers.

He was part of a group of writers called the Profil generation. This group was connected to a literary magazine named Profil. Tor Obrestad also wrote biographies. These are books about other people's lives. He wrote about famous Norwegians like Arne Garborg, Hulda Garborg, Alexander Kielland, and Einar Førde.

One of his novels was called Sauda! Streik!. It came out in 1972. This book was so popular that it was made into a movie! The film was directed by Oddvar Bull Tuhus in 1975.
