Torben Ulrich (born October 4, 1928 – died December 20, 2023) was a talented person from Denmark. He was a writer, a musician, a filmmaker, and a professional tennis player. You might also know him as the father of Lars Ulrich, the drummer for the famous band Metallica.

His Life and Career

Torben Ulrich was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 4, 1928. His father, Einer Ulrich, was also a tennis player.

Tennis Achievements

Torben Ulrich played tennis professionally for many years. He started in the late 1940s and continued into the 1970s. He even played on the Tennis Grand Masters tour in the 1970s and 1980s.

He won the Antwerp International singles title twice, in 1951 and 1956. He also won the Stuttgart Open in 1953. In 1969, at 40 years old, he became a professional tennis player. By 1976, he was the top-ranked senior player in the world.

Ulrich played over 100 matches for Denmark in the Davis Cup. In 1977, just before his 49th birthday, he became the oldest player ever in Davis Cup history.

Writing and Journalism

Ulrich started his writing career in the late 1940s at the Reuters news agency in Copenhagen. He wrote for Danish jazz magazines. In the 1950s, he wrote mostly about music for newspapers like Information and Politiken. He also helped edit a literary magazine called Bazar.

In the 1960s, he had a weekly music column and wrote about jazz and other cultural topics for the newspaper BT. Later, in the 1980s and 1990s, he returned to Information to write about music, films, sports, and culture. In 2003, a collection of his writings was published in a book called Jazz, Bold & Buddhisme.

In the 1950s, Ulrich played the clarinet in a New Orleans-style jazz band. Later, in the 2000s, he worked with a free-jazz group called Clinch. They released an album called "Dice, Done" in 2006.

In 2005, he started his own music group called "Instead Of." They made improvised music and released an album called "Live on Sonarchy" in 2007. He also recorded three albums with Danish pianist Søren Kjærgaard.

Ulrich began painting in 1971. He created art using tennis balls, skipping ropes, and parts of tennis rackets. He called these works "Imprints of Practice" and "Exsamplings of Play." His art has been shown in cities around the world, including Copenhagen, New York, and Los Angeles.
