Torita Blake (born 5 July 1995) is an amazing Indigenous Australian athlete. She has proudly represented Australia at the Paralympic Games. Torita won a bronze medal at the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships. She also competed for Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Before 2016, she competed under the name Torita Isaac.
Torita Blake's Story
Torita Blake was born on 5 July 1995 in Moree, New South Wales. She now lives in Logan, Queensland. Torita was born with cerebral palsy, which affects her movement. She also has very limited vision. She is blind in her right eye and has only 10% vision in her left eye.
Torita is an Indigenous woman from the Dunghutti Aboriginal people. She is a role model and an ambassador for the Raise the Bar Academy. This program helps Indigenous high school students get involved in athletics. Torita wants to inspire young people. She hopes to show Indigenous kids and those with disabilities that they can achieve anything. She believes nothing can stop them from reaching their dreams.
Torita Blake's Athletics Journey
Torita first joined an athletics club in 2011. She is a specialist in sprint races. Athletes with disabilities are given a 'classification' to ensure fair competition. Torita was first classified as a T13 athlete. Later, her classification changed to T38. She used to be a member of the Jimboomba Athletics Club.
Torita competed in several major events in 2012. These included the Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide Track Classics. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, she performed well. She finished seventh in both the 100-meter T38 and 200-meter T38 races. She also placed fourth in the 4 × 100-meter Relay T35-38 event.
In 2013, Torita competed at the 2013 IPC Athletics World Championships in Lyon. She finished seventh in both the Women's 100m and 200m T38 events. At the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha, she achieved a fantastic result. She won a bronze medal in the Women's 400m T38 race.
Torita aimed for a medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. She finished fourth in the 400m T38 event with a time of 1:04.47.
At the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, England, Torita won another bronze medal. This was in the Women's 400m T38. She also finished seventh in the Women's 200m T38 race.
Torita is coached by Wayne Leaver in Brisbane.
