Tormod Haugen facts for kids
Tormod Haugen (born May 12, 1945 – died October 18, 2008) was a famous writer from Norway. He wrote many wonderful books for children and young people. He was also a translator, which means he changed books from one language to another. In 1990, he won a very special prize called the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. This award is like the Nobel Prize for children's books!
About Tormod Haugen
Tormod Haugen grew up in a small village in Norway called Nybergsund. It is in a place called Trysil. After finishing school in 1965, he went to the University of Oslo. From 1971 to 1973, he worked at the Munch Museum.
He started his writing career in 1973 with a book called Ikke som i fjor (which means "Not like last year"). After that, he wrote many books for children and young adults. He became one of the most respected children's writers in Scandinavia.
Tormod Haugen was a very creative writer. He often used ideas from old Norwegian folk tales and myths. He also used ideas from children's stories from all over the world. A common theme in his books was a lonely child. These children often felt that adults did not listen to their feelings or wishes. Because of this, they would end up in situations they could not control.
His books were very popular. They have been sold in 26 countries and translated into 24 different languages. Tormod Haugen was also a busy translator. He translated many books, including The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis into the Norwegian language.
Awards and Prizes
The Hans Christian Andersen Award is a very important prize. It is given every two years by the International Board on Books for Young People. It is the highest award a writer or illustrator of children's books can receive. Tormod Haugen won this award for his writing in 1990.

- In 1984, he was the first children's author to be nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize.
- In 1986, he won the prize from the Nordic School Librarians Association.
- He was nominated for the Norwegian Booksellers' Prize in 1997.
- In 2005, he was nominated for the international Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
