The Torrance School is a historic building in Torrance, California. It is also known as the Torrance High School Annex. This building is part of the Torrance High School campus. It is located in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County, California.
Building History
The main building for Torrance schools opened in 1917. It held both elementary and high school students. In 1923, the building we now call the Torrance School Annex opened. It was built on the south side of the campus. This new building became the Torrance Elementary School.
After the new elementary school opened, the original main building was used only for the high school. In 1963, a completely new elementary school was built away from the campus. The old elementary school building then became part of the high school. It was renamed the Torrance High School Annex.
Building Design
The Torrance School Annex was built between 1923 and 1925. It was designed in the Renaissance Revival style. This style often uses ideas from old Roman and Greek buildings. The building is connected to the rest of the campus. A long, curving walkway with pillars links it to other parts of the school.
School Districts
For many years, Torrance elementary schools were part of the Los Angeles City School District. This changed in 1947. Torrance schools then joined a new school district. In 1948, this new district was renamed the Torrance Unified School District. When the change happened in 1947, the Los Angeles City School District removed furniture from the Torrance schools.
National Historic Place
The Torrance School Annex is a very important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The National Register of Historic Places is a list of places in the United States that are important to history.
The Torrance High School campus has four buildings on this special list. The Torrance School Annex is one of them. The other buildings are:
- Auditorium—Assembly Hall (built in 1938)
- Home Economics Building (built in 1923)
- Main Building (built in 1917)
