A Look Back: The History of the Annex
How the School Building Started
In 1917, the main building for the Torrance School opened. It was used for both elementary and high school students. A few years later, in 1923, this new Torrance Elementary School building opened. It was built on the southern side of the campus. After this new building was ready, the original main building became a high school only.
Becoming the Annex Building
In 1963, a brand new elementary school building was built in a different location. Because of this, the old elementary school building was added to the high school campus. It was then renamed the Torrance High School Annex, or simply the Annex building.
Building Style and Design
The Annex building was constructed between 1923 and 1925. It was designed in a style called Renaissance Revival architecture. This style often uses ideas from old Roman and Greek buildings. The Annex building is connected to the rest of the campus by a long, curved walkway. This walkway has pillars and a more modern design.
Changes in School Districts
For many years, Torrance elementary schools were part of the Los Angeles City School District. This changed in 1947. That year, the elementary schools became part of a new school district. In 1948, this new district was renamed the Torrance Unified School District. When the change happened in 1947, the Los Angeles City School District removed all the furniture from the Torrance schools.
A Special Place: National Register of Historic Places
What is the National Register?
The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is a list of important places in the United States. These places are special because of their history, architecture, or what they mean to a community. Being on this list helps protect them. The Torrance School Annex building was added to the NRHP in 1983.
