Torre del Bierzo (which is Torre de Santa Marina in the Asturian language) is a small village and a larger area called a municipality. It is located in the beautiful region of El Bierzo. This area is part of the province of León, which is in the bigger region of Castile and León in Spain.
In 2018, about 2,162 people lived in the municipality of Torre del Bierzo. This number changes a bit each year. The municipality covers an area of about 119 square kilometers.

Torre del Bierzo has a long and interesting history. It has been an important place for travel and trade for many centuries.
The Roman Bridge
One of the oldest and most important landmarks in Torre del Bierzo is a Roman bridge. This bridge crosses the Tremor river. It was built a very long time ago, in the first century AD.
The bridge was part of a major Roman road called the Via Nova, also known as Via XVII. This road was very important in ancient times. It connected two big cities: Bracara (which is now Braga in Portugal) and Asturica (which is now Astorga in Spain).
A Historical Event
In 1944, Torre del Bierzo was the site of a very serious train accident. Several trains collided inside a tunnel. This event was a significant tragedy in the history of the area. It is remembered as one of the most serious railway accidents in Spain.
