Tortit (Hebrew: טורטית) is a very popular chocolate bar from Israel. It is made by the Elite Confectionery Company. This tasty snack has a crispy wafer covered in chocolate. Inside, it has a special almond cream that tastes a bit like rum.
You can find Tortit bars in a green package, and each one weighs about 40 grams. Tortit is also special because it is kosher and parve. This means it follows Jewish dietary laws. Being parve means it does not contain milk or meat ingredients. This makes it a great dessert after a meat meal. It is also a good choice for people who are vegan, as it has no milk or eggs.
History of Tortit
The Elite company first launched the Tortit chocolate bar in 1975. At that time, Elite also made a milk chocolate with a rum-flavored cream called "Jamaica." The same tasty cream was used inside the new Tortit wafer bar.
The name "Tortit" comes from the word "torte." A torte is a rich, layered cake. The snack was named Tortit because its structure, with layers of wafer and cream, reminded people of a torte cake.
Tortit in the News
In 2017, a Palestinian leader named Marwan Barghouti was in the news. He was filmed secretly eating a Tortit bar. At the time, he was on a declared hunger strike.
After this, the Israeli Pizza Hut company made an advertisement. It asked, "Barghouti: If you’re going to break the strike, isn’t pizza better?" However, Strauss, the company that owns the Elite brand, decided not to use this event for their own advertising. Some news reports said that Tortit sales went up after this incident. But a spokesperson for Strauss said this was not true.
