Island Geography
Tortuguilla Island is unique because it's formed from an ancient coral terrace. This means it's a landmass made up of old, fossilized coral. The island is surrounded by a flat, underwater area called a limestone platform. This platform is about 10 feet (around 3 meters) deep. Many beautiful coral reefs thrive in the waters around this platform. These reefs are home to a wide variety of marine life.
