Tosa Inus are large, strong dogs. The ones bred in Japan usually weigh between 40 and 60 kilograms (about 88 to 132 pounds). Dogs bred outside Japan can be even bigger, weighing from 55 to 95 kilograms (about 121 to 209 pounds). They stand tall, from 62 to 80 centimeters (about 24.5 to 31 inches) at their shoulders.

Their fur, called a coat, is short and smooth. It often comes in colors like red, brindle (which is a striped pattern), or fawn (a light yellowish-brown). Sometimes, their coat can be a dull black, but this is not very common. Taking care of their coat is easy because it's so short. Tosa Inus are very muscular and look athletic. They are known for being tough and can handle a lot of physical activity.

History of the Tosa Inu

The Tosa Inu breed started in Japan in the late 1800s. It began with a native Japanese dog called the Shikoku-Inu. This dog was smaller, weighing about 25 kilograms (45 pounds) and standing about 55 centimeters (21.5 inches) tall. It looked a bit like a European Spitz.

To make a bigger, stronger, and faster fighting dog, breeders crossed the Shikoku-Inu with several European dog breeds. These included the Old English Bulldog (in 1872), the Mastiff (in 1874), the St. Bernard, and the German Pointer (in 1876). Later, they also added the Great Dane (in 1924) and the Bull Terrier.

Today, while some countries still use Tosa Inus for dog fighting, many people keep them as pets. They can be wonderful companions in a family. Tosa Inus are known to be patient and very friendly when they live with people.
