Toshihide Saito (斉藤 俊秀, Saitō Toshihide, born April 20, 1973) is a famous Japanese former football player and manager. He was born in Shizuoka, Japan. Toshihide Saito played as a defender for many years. After his playing career, he became a coach. He currently works as an assistant coach for the Japan national team.

Toshihide Saito's Club Career

Toshihide Saito started his professional football journey in 1996. He joined his hometown club, Shimizu S-Pulse, after finishing university. He quickly became a key player for the team.

Playing for Shimizu S-Pulse

In his first year, Shimizu S-Pulse won the 1996 J.League Cup. Toshihide Saito was recognized as a "New Hero" for his great performance. He also won the "J.League Rookie of the Year" award that same year.

Shimizu S-Pulse continued to be a strong team. They finished second in the 1998 Emperor's Cup and the 1999 J1 League. Toshihide Saito was even chosen for the "Best Eleven" team in 1999.

In the early 2000s, the club achieved more success. They won the 1999–2000 Asian Cup Winners' Cup. They also lifted the 2001 Emperor's Cup trophy. Toshihide Saito was a big part of these victories.

Moving to Other Clubs

In 2006, Toshihide Saito moved to Shonan Bellmare, a club in the J2 League. He played there for two seasons. Later, in 2009, he joined Fujieda MYFC.

At Fujieda MYFC, he took on a new role. He became a player-manager, meaning he played and coached at the same time. He helped the club get promoted to the Japan Football League in 2011. He left the club in 2013.

Toshihide Saito's International Career

Toshihide Saito also played for the Japan national team. He represented his country 17 times between 1996 and 1999.

His first game for Japan was on August 25, 1996. It was a friendly match against Uruguay. He was part of the Japan squad for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Although he did not play in any matches, being part of the team was a great honor. He also played in the 1999 Copa América tournament.
