Towa Carson (born Birgit Rose-Marie Carlsson on March 31, 1936) is a famous Swedish singer. She is known for her schlager music, which is a popular style of music in Europe. Towa has been performing for many years, starting in 1954.

Towa Carson's Early Career and Hit Songs

Towa Carson began her singing career in 1954. She became very popular in the 1950s and 1960s. She had many hit songs that people loved to listen to.

Popular Hits from the 50s and 60s

Some of her most famous songs include:

  • "De tre klockorna" (a Swedish version of "The Three Bells")
  • "Spara sista dansen för mig" (which means "Save the Last Dance for Me")
  • "Jag måste ge mig av" (her biggest hit, a Swedish version of "Gotta Travel On")

Towa also sang many songs with another popular singer, Lasse Lönndahl. Their most successful duet was "Visa mig hur man går hem" (a Swedish version of "Show Me the Way to Go Home"). Over the years, 25 of her songs have appeared on the Swedish music chart called Svensktoppen.

Melodifestivalen Appearances

Towa Carson has taken part in Melodifestivalen several times. This is a big Swedish song contest that chooses the country's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Competing in the 1960s

  • In Melodifestivalen 1967, she sang "Du vet var jag finns" and came in third place.
  • In Melodifestivalen 1968, she sang two songs:
    • "Alla har glömt" which finished in fourth place.
    • "Vem frågar vinden" which finished in fifth place.

Even though she was very popular, Towa never tried to become famous in other countries. She reportedly received offers from places like the US and West Germany, but she chose to stay and perform in Sweden.

Hanson, Carson & Malmkvist: A Special Trio

In 2004, when Towa was 68 years old, she joined two other well-known Melodifestivalen singers: Siw Malmkvist and Ann-Louise Hanson. They formed a trio called Hanson, Carson & Malmkvist.

The Trio's Return to Melodifestivalen

This group got a lot of attention because all three singers were over 60 years old. They sang a song called "C'est la vie" in Melodifestivalen 2004. The song was written by the famous Swedish composer Thomas G:son. It was a fun mix of schlager music with a fast dance beat.

The trio was very popular with the audience who voted by phone (televoting). They made it through their semi-final round and performed in the final. They finished in tenth place with an energetic performance that even included Siw's amazing kicks! They also appeared at a popular Swedish summer music event called Allsång på Skansen that year.

Personal Life

Towa Carson celebrated her 70th birthday in 2006. She is married to Bengt Anlert, who used to be a soccer player for AIK.

The Story Behind Her Stage Name

Her unique stage name, Towa, comes from her childhood. When she was a little girl, her father used to call her "Min lilla Tova" (which means "My little tangle"). He called her this because her hair would often get tangled. The Swedish word tova actually means 'tangle'.
