Building the Tower of Memories
The Tower of Memories has a long and interesting history. Its design looks like old European castles.
Who Designed It?
The first ideas for the tower came from an architect named Charles A. Smith. He started designing it in 1926.
However, his company ran into problems in 1928. So, two other architects, William and Arthur Fisher, took over the project.
Delays and Completion
Building the tower was not easy. There were many delays, especially because of World War II. It was hard to get materials and workers during that time.
Finally, in 1948, another architect named John Monroe was hired. He was the one who finished building the Tower of Memories. It took over 20 years to complete!
Architectural Style
The Tower of Memories mixes two cool architectural styles:
- Gothic Revival: This style looks like medieval castles and cathedrals. It often has pointed arches and tall, slender shapes.
- Moderne: This style, also known as Art Deco or Streamline Moderne, was popular in the 1920s and 1930s. It features sleek lines and geometric shapes.
The combination of these styles makes the Tower of Memories a unique and beautiful building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 25, 1987.
