What Was the Littleton Town Hall?
Building a Community Hub (1920-1977)
The building was designed by Colorado architect Jacques Benedict. It was built in 1920 to be a new center for the town's activities. It had an Italianate style. This means it looked like buildings from Italy.
Inside, it held the treasurer's office, where town money was managed. It also had council chambers, where town leaders met. There were rooms for fire trucks and hoses. A large auditorium was on the second floor. This space was used for many town events.
Italian Design with an American Touch
The building's design was inspired by a famous building in Italy. It was called the Palazzo della Ragione in Vicenza. But the Littleton Town Hall also had American features. For example, you can see an eagle above the second-story windows. The Colorado state flower, the Columbine, is also on the outside.
Over time, the inside of the building changed. In the 1950s, more offices were added. In 1972, the Town Hall became one of the first buildings protected by a special law. This law helps save historic places. In 1977, the City of Littleton moved to a new office building.
Town Hall Arts Center Today (Since 1983)
A Place for Arts and Learning
After the city moved out, people worked to save the old Town Hall. They raised money and made it into a performing arts center and art gallery. It opened in 1983.
Today, the Town Hall Arts Center is a busy place. It hosts live theater shows, cultural events, and art exhibits. Each year, from September to June, they put on six main stage shows. These are usually musicals or comedies. They also have seven to eight concerts.
Programs for Young People
The center also has a special theater program for children. Young actors put on two shows each year. These shows often feature professional actors too. Classes are offered all year for students aged seven to seventeen. Kids can learn about stage craft, acting, and creative drama.
