Tradate is a city and a comune (which is like a town or municipality) in northern Italy. It is located in the province of Varese, within the Lombardy region. Tradate is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) away from Varese, which is the capital city of its province.
In 2018, about 18,983 people lived in Tradate. It was given the special title of "city" by a presidential decree on January 28, 1958. The current mayor of Tradate is Giuseppe Bascialla.
Tradate is also home to some interesting museums. One is the Fisogni Museum of the Petrol Stations, which holds a Guinness World Records title for having the largest collection of fuel pumps in the world! There's also the Frera Motorcycle Museum, where you can see many cool motorcycles.
What's in a Name?
The name "Tradate" has a bit of a mystery around its origins. Experts have a couple of ideas about where it came from:
- The historian Gerhard Rohlfs thought the name might have come from the first name Theodorus.
- Another expert, Antonio Olivieri, believed the name came from the Germanic name Teuderad. This name then slowly changed over time to become Tederate, and finally "Tradate".
A Look Back in Time
Tradate has a long history, going all the way back to Roman times. A very old Roman road, called the Mediolanum-Bilitio road, used to pass right through the area where Tradate is now. This road connected important cities like Mediolanum (which is now Milan) and Luganum (which is now Lugano in Switzerland). It also went through Varisium (today's Varese).
People believe that this area has been lived in since the Roman Empire. Even after the Roman Empire fell due to barbarian migrations, people continued to live and settle in this territory.
