Flew from Kaohsiung International Airport
Flying to Magong Airport

TransAsia Airways Flight 222 (also known as GE222 or TNA222) was a plane trip that was supposed to go from Kaohsiung International Airport to Magong Airport in Taiwan. This flight happened on July 23, 2014. There were 54 passengers and 4 crew members on board the plane.

Sadly, the plane crashed while trying to land at Magong, which is on Penghu Island. Forty-eight people died in this accident. The plane was trying to land, but it couldn't, so the pilots tried to "go-around." This means they tried to fly up again to make another attempt at landing. However, the plane crashed in a place called Huxi. The crash also caused a fire that damaged two homes nearby. A big storm called Typhoon Matmo was passing through Taiwan at the time, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms.

What Happened During the Flight?

Flight 222 was a regular trip within Taiwan. It was flying from the city of Kaohsiung to Magong. The plane was an ATR 72-500, which is a type of propeller airplane.

When the plane got close to Magong Airport, the weather was very bad. There was a strong typhoon named Matmo nearby. This typhoon caused a lot of rain and strong winds.

The pilots tried to land the plane, but they couldn't see the runway clearly because of the storm. They decided to try a "go-around." This is when a pilot stops the landing and flies the plane back up into the sky. They do this to try landing again more safely.

However, during this go-around attempt, the plane crashed. It hit the ground near Xixi village in Huxi. The crash was very serious and caused a fire.

The Aircraft Involved

The plane that crashed was an ATR 72-500. Its special number was B-22810. This type of plane is often used for shorter flights. It has two engines with propellers.

The plane was operated by an airline called TransAsia Airways. This airline was based in Taiwan.

The Weather Conditions

On the day of the crash, July 23, 2014, Typhoon Matmo was affecting Taiwan. Typhoons are very powerful storms that bring strong winds and heavy rain.

The bad weather made it very difficult for planes to land. Pilots need to be able to see the runway clearly to land safely. The heavy rain and strong winds from Typhoon Matmo made visibility very poor around Magong Airport.

After the Crash

After the plane crashed, emergency teams quickly went to the site. Many people were hurt, and sadly, many also died. Ten people on the plane survived the crash. Five people on the ground were also injured because of the fire caused by the crash.

This accident was a very sad event for Taiwan. Investigations were done to find out exactly why the crash happened. This helps to make flying safer in the future.
