Transylvania is a small, unincorporated community located in East Carroll Parish, Louisiana, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place with a group of homes and businesses, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. As of the year 2000, about 743 people lived there.

Where is Transylvania?

Transylvania is found in the northeastern part of Louisiana. It's about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of a town called Lake Providence.

You can find Transylvania right on U.S. Highway 65. This highway is a main road that runs through the area. It's also very close to the famous Mississippi River.

The Story Behind the Name

How Transylvania Got Its Name

The community of Transylvania was named a long time ago, in the early 1800s. A man named Dr. W. L. Richards bought a lot of land in northern Louisiana. He was a former student of Transylvania University, a school in Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. Richards loved his old school so much that he decided to name his new community after it! Transylvania University is still a well-known school today.

The Dracula Connection

When many people in the United States hear the name "Transylvania," they often think of the famous Dracula movies. This is because the fictional home of Dracula is also called Transylvania, a region in Romania.

Because of this fun connection, the general store in Transylvania, Louisiana, sells items related to Dracula and bats. People traveling on Highway 65 often stop by to buy these unique souvenirs!

A Powerful Tornado

On Sunday, February 21, 1971, Transylvania experienced a very strong tornado. This tornado was an F5, which is the highest rating for a tornado, meaning it caused incredible damage. It was a large storm that traveled a long distance.
