Travers, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Travers is a small place in Barry County, Missouri, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.

Travers is located on the west side of Flat Creek. It's just north of a spot called Twin Springs in Corder Hollow. Nearby places include Butterfield, which is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to the west, and Cassville, which is about five miles (8 km) southwest along Flat Creek.

The Story of Travers

Travers has a bit of history tied to its name. A long time ago, a place where people could send and receive mail, called a post office, opened there in 1889. Back then, it was actually spelled "Traverse."

The post office closed for a short time in 1894. But then, in 1898, it reopened with a slightly different spelling: "Travers." It stayed open until 1903 when it was finally closed for good.

The community was named after a person named O.H. Traverse. He was a legislator from Illinois. A legislator is someone who is elected by people to make laws for their state or country.
