History of Tremont

Early Settlement and Growth

Historians say that by 1844, there were no big buildings in the area that would become Tremont. However, a serious effort to settle the land began that year. This was because of the large amount of coal found nearby.

Within four years, important businesses started. The Tremont Iron Works was built in 1847 by Umholtz & Lentz. A new post office also opened in 1848. John B. Zeibach was the first postmaster. Later, the first National Bank of Tremont opened its doors in 1865.

Becoming a Borough and Water System

Tremont officially became a borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania in 1866. Around the same time, Isaac P. Bechtel built a water system for the town. This first part of the water system cost about $20,000 to build.

Four years later, Bechtel started the Tremont Water and Gas Company. The construction of Bechtel's water system was finished in December 1874.

Local Newspapers

The community also had two local newspapers. These were the Tremont News and the West Schuylkill Press. S. C. Kirk started and ran the West Schuylkill Press. In 1884, he gave control of the newspaper to John A. Bechtel.
