Trescape (sometimes called Trescope) was once a small community in Kern County, California. It was located in the desert, about 8 miles (13 kilometers) northeast of the town of Mojave. Trescape was quite high up, sitting at an elevation of 2,625 feet (800 meters) above sea level. This former settlement appeared on maps as late as 1947, but today, it no longer exists as a populated place.

What Was Trescape?

Trescape was a small stop along the Southern Pacific Railroad. Railroads were very important in the past. They helped people and goods travel across the country. Small settlements often grew up around these railroad stops.

Where Was Trescape Located?

Trescape was in Kern County, a large county in central California. This area is known for its deserts and mountains. Being near Mojave meant it was in a dry, open landscape. The elevation of 2,625 feet means it was in a higher part of the desert.

Why Do Settlements Disappear?

Many small settlements like Trescape become "former settlements" or "ghost towns." This happens for several reasons.

  • Changes in transportation: When railroads became less important, or new roads were built elsewhere, towns along old routes might lose their purpose.
  • Economic changes: If a town was built around a specific industry, like mining, and that industry ended, people would move away.
  • Lack of resources: Sometimes, places ran out of water or other important resources.
  • Natural events: Floods, fires, or other disasters could also cause people to leave.

For Trescape, its connection to the railroad was likely key. When the railroad's importance changed, or if the specific stop was no longer needed, the community faded away.
