Canal boats in the Trevor Basin

Trevor Basin is a special wide part of a canal where boats can turn around or stop. It's like a parking lot for canal boats! This basin is located on the famous Llangollen Canal, close to a village called Trevor in Wales. It sits between the towns of Llangollen and Ruabon.

What is Trevor Basin?

A canal basin is a wider section of a canal. It allows boats to easily stop, load, unload, or turn around. Trevor Basin is an important part of the Llangollen Canal. This canal is known for its beautiful scenery and amazing engineering.

The History of Trevor Basin

Trevor Basin was first built as part of a different canal called the Ellesmere Canal. It was located very close to the incredible Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. This aqueduct is a huge bridge that carries the canal over a valley.

Originally, the Ellesmere Canal was planned to go all the way to Chester. But those plans changed. Because of this, Trevor Basin became the very end, or "terminus," of the Ellesmere Canal. It was the last stop!

Later on, the canal was made longer. It was extended westwards towards Llangollen and a place called the Horseshoe Falls. This extension had a special job: to act as a "feeder." This means it helped supply water to the rest of the canal. Canals need a lot of water to stay full!

Trevor Basin Today

Today, Trevor Basin is a very popular spot for visitors. Many people come to see the amazing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which is right next to the basin. The basin itself offers great places to park and take photos.

You can find many things around the basin for visitors to enjoy. There's a pub, a tea room, and a visitor centre. You might even see a cafe boat where you can grab a snack! Public toilets are also available for convenience. It's a busy and fun place to visit!
