Triangle 54

Triangle 54 is a small public park in Long Island City, a neighborhood in Queens, New York City. It's often called a "traffic triangle" because it's shaped like a triangle and is surrounded by streets. This park covers about 8,973 square feet (833 square meters), which is roughly the size of a small playground.

What is Triangle 54?

Triangle 54 is located in an area of Long Island City once known as Blissville. It sits between 48th Street and 54th Avenue. Even though it's small, it's an important green space for the community. The park has ten trees that provide shade and a peaceful spot for people to relax.

The Memorial Flagstaff

At the very center of Triangle 54, you'll find a special flagstaff. This flagstaff was put there in 1930. It has a granite base with words carved into it. The original message said, "Erected by the citizens of Laurel Hill in memory of those who died in the World War."

Remembering Heroes

The name "Laurel Hill" is an old name for this part of Queens. It used to have its own train station! Even today, you can still see the name "Laurel Hill Boulevard" on maps, just a few blocks north of the park.

Over the years, more words were added to the flagstaff's base. After World War II, that war was included in the message. Later, the Korean War and the Vietnam War were also added. This means the flagstaff now honors people who served and died in several major conflicts, reminding everyone of their bravery and sacrifice.
