What is Olympic Triathlon?
The Olympic triathlon is a single race where athletes complete three parts one after another. There are no separate heats or rounds. All competitors race at the same time.
The distances for the individual races are:
- Swimming: 1.5 km (0.93 mi) (about 0.93 miles)
- Cycling: 40 km (25 mi) (about 24.85 miles)
- Running: 10 km (6.2 mi) (about 6.21 miles)
Mixed Team Relay
The mixed team event is a relay race. Each team has four athletes: two men and two women. Each athlete completes a shorter triathlon before tagging their teammate.
The distances for each person in the relay are:
- Swimming: 300 m (330 yd) (about 328 yards)
- Cycling: 8 km (5.0 mi) (about 4.97 miles)
- Running: 2 km (1.2 mi) (about 1.24 miles)
How Athletes Qualified
Athletes had to earn their spot to compete in the Olympics. The qualification period lasted for two years, from May 2022 to May 2024. Countries could send a maximum of three male and three female athletes.
As the host country, France automatically received two spots for men and two for women. Other athletes qualified by performing well in major competitions. This included the Mixed Relay World Championships. Top athletes from around the world also earned spots based on their rankings.
Event Schedule
All event times are in Central European Summer Time (UTC+2). Please note that times can sometimes change.

Mixed Relay | 5 August | 8:00 |
The men's individual event was first planned for July 30, 2024. However, it was moved to July 31. This change happened because the water in the Seine river was not clean enough for swimming.
