Tribhuwana Wijayatunggadewi was a powerful queen who ruled the Majapahit Empire. She was also known by her royal name, Tribhuwannottunggadewi Jayawishnuwardhani, and as Dyah Gitarja. She became the third ruler of Majapahit, reigning from 1328 to 1350.
Before becoming queen, she held the title Bhre Kahuripan, which meant she was the Duchess of Kahuripan. During her time as queen, she worked closely with her chief minister, Gajah Mada. Together, they helped the Majapahit Empire grow much larger. People remembered her as a very brave, wise, and smart leader.
Becoming Queen
Tribhuwana Wijayatunggadewi was the daughter of Raden Wijaya, who founded the Majapahit Empire. Her mother was Gayatri Rajapatni, a very important royal figure.
She became queen in 1328. This happened after her brother, King Jayanegara, passed away. Her mother, Gayatri, was supposed to be the next ruler. However, Gayatri had become a Buddhist nun and could not rule. So, Tribhuwana took the throne instead.
Expanding the Empire
Queen Tribhuwana's reign was a time of great growth for Majapahit. She had a very skilled chief minister named Gajah Mada. He was famous for his "Palapa Oath." In this oath, Gajah Mada promised not to eat certain foods until he had united the entire Nusantara (the Indonesian archipelago) under Majapahit's rule.
- Conquering Bali: In 1343, Queen Tribhuwana and Gajah Mada led a military campaign to conquer the island of Bali. This brought Bali under Majapahit's control.
- Other Campaigns: They also expanded the empire to other islands. These included Sumatra and parts of the Malay Peninsula. These victories made Majapahit a very strong and respected empire in Southeast Asia.
Her Family and Successor
Queen Tribhuwana was married to Prince Cakradhara, who was also known as Kertawardhana Bhre Tumapel. They had a son named Hayam Wuruk.
In 1350, Queen Tribhuwana decided to step down from her role as queen. She did this to allow her son, Hayam Wuruk, to become the new ruler. Hayam Wuruk would later become one of the most famous and powerful kings of Majapahit.
Legacy
Tribhuwana Wijayatunggadewi is remembered as a strong and effective ruler. She laid the groundwork for Majapahit's "Golden Age." This was a time when the empire reached its greatest power and influence under her son, Hayam Wuruk. Her leadership, along with Gajah Mada's military skills, made Majapahit a dominant force in the region.
