Tricker's Mill is a tall, old tower mill located in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England. It is a very special building because it is a Grade II listed structure. This means it is historically important and protected. Today, this old mill has been turned into a unique place where people can stay for holidays!

History of Tricker's Mill

Tricker's Mill was built a long time ago, in 1818. It was designed to grind corn using the power of the wind.

Changes to the Mill's Cap

When it was first built, the mill had a round, domed top, called a cap. But in 1881, a strong wind blew this cap off! A new cap was built to replace it. This new cap was shaped like a boat.

When the Mill Stopped Working

The mill used wind power to grind corn until about 1920. In 1957, the cap and the remaining sails were taken off. This left just the main tower with a roof over where the cap used to be.

Saving the Mill from Demolition

In 1973, there was a plan to tear down Tricker's Mill. But many people who loved old buildings spoke up. Because of their efforts, the mill was saved! It became part of a housing area called Mussidan Place.

Restoration and New Purpose

In 2011, the company that managed the housing decided to sell the mill. It was bought by W & T Catchpole. They started a big project to fix up the mill.

Work began in January 2012 to repair and make the mill strong again. By March 2016, all the work was finished. Now, Tricker's Mill is available for people to rent and stay in for their holidays.

What is Tricker's Mill Like?

Tricker's Mill is a five-storey tower mill. This means it's a tall, round building with five levels inside.

Parts of the Mill

It used to have a boat-shaped cap on top, which had a walkway around it. This cap was turned into the wind by a special part called a fantail. The mill also had four large Patent sails that caught the wind.

Inside, the mill had three pairs of large grinding stones, called millstones. These stones would crush the corn into flour. Two pairs of these millstones are still there today. The main shaft that the sails turned, called the windshaft, was made of cast iron. Interestingly, this windshaft had been used in another type of windmill before! Most of the original machinery is still inside the mill.
