The Bornean pit viper (scientific name: Craspedocephalus borneensis) is a fascinating venomous snake. It is a type of pit viper found only on the island of Borneo. This snake is unique because it lives nowhere else in the world! Scientists do not currently recognize any different types or subspecies of this snake.

What Does the Bornean Pit Viper Look Like?

Size and Scales

Adult Bornean pit vipers can grow up to about 83 centimeters (33 inches) long. That's almost a meter! Like all snakes, they are covered in special scales. These scales help them move and protect their bodies. They have many rows of scales along their back and belly.

Colors and Patterns

This snake can have many different colors. Some are brown with darker brown patches, like saddles. Others might be light brown with just a few darker marks. You might even see a bright yellow one with dark patterns! This variety helps them blend into their surroundings.

Where Does the Bornean Pit Viper Live?

The Bornean pit viper lives on the large island of Borneo. This island is shared by several countries: Brunei, Indonesia (in a part called Kalimantan), and Malaysia (in areas like Sabah and Sarawak). You can also find them on the nearby Natuna Islands.

What Kind of Home Does It Like?

This snake prefers to live in forests. It likes places that are not too high up, usually below 1,130 meters (about 3,700 feet) in altitude.

Adult Bornean pit vipers usually stay on the ground in the forest. Even though their tail can grab onto things, like a monkey's tail, they mostly stick to the forest floor. Younger snakes, called juveniles, might be found in low plants and bushes.

What Does the Bornean Pit Viper Eat?

The Bornean pit viper is a predator. It hunts for its food. Its favorite meals include small rodents, like mice or rats. It also enjoys eating small birds.

How Does It Have Babies?

Scientists are still learning about the Bornean pit viper's reproduction. They are not yet sure if this snake lays eggs or if it gives birth to live young. This is a mystery that researchers are still trying to solve!
