Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Trisutji Djuliati Kamal (born November 28, 1936 – died March 21, 2021) was a very important composer from Indonesia. She was born in Jakarta and spent her childhood in a place called the Sultanate of Langkat, near Binjai, on the island of Sumatra.

Trisutji loved music from a young age. She traveled to Europe to study piano and how to write music (composition). She learned from famous teachers like Henk Badings at the Amsterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. She also studied in Paris, France, and Rome, Italy, at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory.

After finishing her studies, Kamal came back to Indonesia in 1967. She started working as a musician and a composer, creating her own unique sounds. In 1994, she started her own music group called the Trisutji Kamal Ensemble. This group was special because it used two pianos along with traditional Indonesian singing, instruments, and dance. Trisutji Kamal passed away when she was 84 years old.

Her Music and Compositions

Trisutji Kamal wrote many different kinds of music. Her compositions included pieces for large orchestras, smaller groups of instruments (chamber music), choirs, and even music for solo piano. She also wrote music for operas, ballets, and movies!

What made her music special was how she blended different styles. She often used sounds and ideas from gamelan music, which is traditional Indonesian music, and elements from Islamic culture. She combined traditional Indonesian instruments with Western instruments, creating a unique and beautiful sound.

Here are some of her well-known compositions:

  • From the Spaces of Life, written in 1969
  • Gunung Agung (Mount Agung, 1963–70), a ballet suite
  • Menara Mesjid Nabawi (The Minaret of the Nabawi Mosque)
  • Biarkan musim berganti, a film soundtrack from 1971
  • Prayer of Redemption, a piece for orchestra written in 2004

Many of her piano pieces have been recorded on CDs by another Indonesian pianist and composer named Ananda Sukarlan.
