Discovering the Triune Masonic Temple

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the oldest and largest friendly groups in the world. Members join to learn about good character and help their communities. They often meet in special buildings called temples or lodges.

Building a Special Place

The Triune Masonic Temple was designed by Henry C. Struchen. He was a builder and designer, not a trained architect. Interestingly, he was also a member of the Triune Lodge that would use the building. This means he knew exactly what they needed.

The temple was finished in 1910. Its grand opening was held on Thursday, March 2, 1911. This building was made just for the Triune Lodge No. 190, AF & AM.

A Historic Landmark

On November 13, 1980, the Triune Masonic Temple was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as very important for its history and amazing design. It is a special part of American history.

Inside and Out: Architectural Style

The temple is a great example of the Neo-Classical Revival style. This style was popular in the early 1900s. It brings back ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.

The outside of the temple looks almost exactly as it did when it was built. The front has four large Doric columns. These are a type of classic Greek column. There are also windows with decorative tops and a fancy edge along the roof.

The inside is just as impressive. It still has its original look and feel. The main meeting room has tall pillars. These pillars show off five different classic styles of architecture. The beautiful cherry and maple wood inside is also original. Many of the first pieces of furniture are still there too.

What makes this building extra special is how it uses Masonic ideas in its design. The architecture itself tells a story about the group's traditions.

A Lasting Legacy

The Historic Triune Masonic Temple is very important to the cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. It is the last old Masonic temple left in these two cities. Today, it is home to Saint Paul Lodge Number Three A. F. & A. M. of Minnesota.
