Part of the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season |
Tropical Storm Bertha was a weak tropical storm that formed in the Atlantic Ocean during the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the second tropical storm of that year. Bertha formed very quickly near the coast of Louisiana on August 4, 2002.
Bertha made landfall, meaning it moved over land, in Louisiana first. Then, it moved across the Gulf of Mexico and made a second landfall in Texas. The storm faded away just ten hours after reaching Texas. Bertha was one of only three storms to hit both Texas and Louisiana. The other two were Allison in 2001 and Fern in 1971.
Tropical Storm Bertha caused about $200,000 in damage. Sadly, one person died because of the storm.
Why Bertha's Name Was Used Again
When a tropical storm or hurricane causes a lot of damage or deaths, its name is usually "retired." This means the name won't be used again for another storm. However, because Tropical Storm Bertha caused very little damage, its name was not retired. The name Bertha was used again for another storm in 2008.
