Part of the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season

Hurricane Isidore was a very powerful storm during the 2002 Atlantic hurricane season. It started as a tropical storm and grew into a strong hurricane. Isidore traveled across many places, including the Windward Islands, Venezuela, Jamaica, Cuba, and Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It also affected parts of the United States.

Isidore caused a lot of damage, costing about $1.3 billion. Sadly, 22 people lost their lives because of the storm.

Isidore's Journey and Strength

Hurricane Isidore began forming on September 14, 2002. It quickly gained strength as it moved across the Atlantic Ocean. Forecasters thought it might hit the United States as a very strong Category 4 hurricane. This would have meant extremely dangerous winds and heavy rain.

Hitting Mexico and Weakening

However, Isidore slowed down a lot when it reached the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Moving slowly over land made the hurricane lose much of its power. This was good news for the United States. By the time Isidore reached Louisiana, it had weakened significantly. It was only a tropical storm when it made landfall there.

Why the Name "Isidore" Was Retired

When a hurricane causes a lot of damage or deaths, its name is often "retired." This means the name will never be used again for another Atlantic hurricane. The name "Isidore" was retired because of the serious impact it had.

What Happens to Retired Names?

When a name is retired, a new name takes its place on the list for future hurricane seasons. For example, the name "Isidore" was replaced by "Ike." Interestingly, Hurricane Ike, which happened in 2008, was also a very destructive storm, and its name was retired too!
