The Troubridge Hill Aquatic Reserve is a special underwater protected area in South Australia. It's located in Investigator Strait, right next to the south coast of Yorke Peninsula at a place called Troubridge Hill. Think of it like an underwater park where marine animals and their homes are kept safe.

Protecting Our Oceans

This aquatic reserve was created on June 28, 1984. Its main goal is to protect the amazing ocean habitats and all the creatures that live there. It's also a place where people can learn about marine life and enjoy fun activities.

What You Can and Cannot Do

To keep the ocean healthy, there are some rules. You are not allowed to collect or remove any marine animals or plants from the reserve. However, you can still enjoy some activities:

  • Boating
  • Recreational diving
  • Swimming
  • Line fishing (but only for certain types of organisms)

Where is the Reserve?

The Troubridge Hill Aquatic Reserve stretches out into the sea for about 1.6 kilometers (about 1 mile) from the coastline. It covers the area between Suicide Point (west of Troubridge Hill) and a spot about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) east of Troubridge Hill.

The SS Clan Ranald Shipwreck

Inside this aquatic reserve, you can find the site of a famous shipwreck. It's the wreck of the SS Clan Ranald, a ship that sank a long time ago. This adds an interesting historical touch to the protected area.

Part of a Bigger Park

Since 2012, the Troubridge Hill Aquatic Reserve has also been part of a larger protected area. It's located within a "habitat protection zone" inside the Lower Yorke Peninsula Marine Park. This means it gets extra protection as part of a bigger effort to keep our oceans healthy.

Global Protection Status

This aquatic reserve is recognized internationally for its importance. It's classified as an IUCN Category VI protected area. This category means it's a protected area where people can use natural resources in a sustainable way, while still protecting the environment.
