Making the Song
The song "True Love's Kiss" was written to be a special tribute and a funny copy of the "I Want" songs from old Disney princess movies. These classic songs were often sung by princesses in films from the 1930s to the 1950s.
A Challenging Song to Create
Creating this song was a big challenge for the songwriters. They wanted it to sound like the old Disney songs, but also be a bit funny and new. Alan Menken called it a "pivotal assignment" because many people had ideas about how it should sound.
The songwriters, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, worked with the movie's director, Kevin Lima. They wanted to capture the "classic Walt Disney" sound. Stephen Schwartz tried to imagine how Walt Disney's early movies were made with music. He aimed to keep that classic feeling but also add some new twists to the words and lyrics.
Inspired by Classic Disney
The song is meant to playfully copy a common idea in the three oldest Disney princess movies: Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty. In these films, the main characters often meet, sing a song, and then get married very quickly. "True Love's Kiss" reminds listeners of songs like "I'm Wishing/One Song" and "Someday My Prince Will Come" from these classic movies.
A small part of "True Love's Kiss" is also used in Carrie Underwood's song "Ever Ever After", which plays during the movie's credits.
Where the Song Appears
"True Love's Kiss" is heard at the very beginning of Enchanted. This part of the movie is animated, like a classic cartoon.
The Story of the Song
In the movie, the character Giselle sings about her wish for true love's kiss. Prince Edward then appears, and they sing about love together. This happens after Giselle is attacked by a troll. The song helps to show that for both Giselle and Edward, finding "True Love's Kiss" is very important to them.
