The Truman Parkway is a special road in Milton and southern Boston, Massachusetts. It's called a "parkway" because it's designed to be scenic, often with green spaces nearby. This parkway runs along the edge of the Neponset River Reservation, which is a beautiful park area.
The Truman Parkway helps connect two other parkways: the Neponset Valley Parkway and the Blue Hills Parkway. It was built a long time ago, in 1931. Because of its history and design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it's an important historical site in the United States.
What the Truman Parkway Looks Like
The Truman Parkway starts in Milton, near Brush Hill Road. It's a four-lane road, meaning it has two lanes going in each direction. There's a grassy area in the middle that separates the lanes.
As you travel along the parkway, it curves and winds. It generally follows the shape of the Neponset River. This river is on the southern side of the Neponset River Reservation.
The parkway has a main intersection with Beacon Street and Fairmount Avenue. Fairmount Avenue crosses the river into Boston. There are a few shops and businesses at this spot. After that, the parkway goes through an area with houses on both sides.
Further along, a railroad track runs next to the parkway, separating it from the river for a bit. The railroad then crosses the river. The parkway continues between a part of the Neponset River Reservation and a local playground. Finally, the parkway itself crosses the river into Boston and ends at the Neponset Valley Parkway.
How the Truman Parkway Was Built
The Truman Parkway is a bit different from other parkways in the Boston area. Most of them were built by a group called the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC). However, the Truman Parkway was built by the Massachusetts Department of Public Works. This happened in 1931.
Even though a different group built it, the parkway was designed to be just as good as the MDC's parkways. Later, in 1956, the Metropolitan District Commission took over the Truman Parkway.
