Truth Hurts' Music Journey
Starting Out in Music
In 2000, Shari Watson joined Dr. Dre's music label, Aftermath Entertainment. She first sang as a backing vocalist (a singer who supports the main singer) on Busta Rhymes' popular song "Break Ya Neck" in 2001. That same year, she had small acting roles in the movies The Wash and Ali.
Her First Album and Big Hit
Truth Hurts released her first solo album, Truthfully Speaking, in 2002. Famous producers like Dr. Dre and Timbaland helped create the music for this album. Her first song from the album, "Addictive", became a Top 10 hit in the United States. The song featured a rap verse from the artist Rakim.
"Addictive" used parts of an older song called "Thoda Resham Lagta Hai" by Lata Mangeshkar. There was a legal issue about using this part of the song. However, a judge later decided that the album could be sold. The song "Addictive" is now available for everyone to listen to on streaming services.
Touring and New Music
In the summer of 2002, Truth Hurts joined the Smokin' Grooves tour. She performed alongside other big artists like Lauryn Hill and Outkast. After the success of "Addictive", she continued to lend her voice to other artists' songs. She sang on "The Watcher 2" for Jay-Z's album and "What" for Eve's album.
Her next song, "The Truth", was released but did not become as popular as "Addictive".
Second Album and Recent Work
Truth Hurts released her second album, Ready Now, in 2004. This album was on Raphael Saadiq's Pookie Entertainment label. The first song from this album was also called "Ready Now".
In 2005, she worked with music producer J Dilla on the song "Ghetto Love" before he passed away. Truth Hurts continues to make new music and has released several songs online. She also tours and performs in Europe. In 2011, she contributed to a solo album by John Frusciante, though her part was not included in the final version.
